Feeding the Hungry

It costs about $11.25 to feed a family for a week in Haiti. Here's the figures... a 50 kg bag of beans costs about $95 and a 25 kg bag of rice costs about $24.

Tonight the team spent some time organizing a ton of beans and 1.5 tons of rice into family size bags. The recognized measure for food is called a "marmite". This is basically an empty large coffee can. We scooped up one marmite of beans and 3 marmites of rice into bags. Each family will receive one bag of beans and one bag of rice.

The supplies we went through tonight included 13 bags of beans and 66 bags of rice. That's a total cost of about $2,820 which will feed 250 families.

It took about a dozen people an hour to organize all this, a very worthwhile investment in my estimation.
